During Bullying No Way Week (12-16 of August), we engaged our students in various activities in the theme of “Everyone Belongs”. Unlike other years we also included a self-reflection exercise that was aimed at fostering empathy and self-kindness in situations where results didn’t go to plan.
First, students reflected on how they support a close friend who is struggling, noting their typical responses, supportive words, and tone. Next, they compared this to how they treat themselves in similar situations, identifying any differences in their self-responses. Students explored the reasons behind these differences and considered factors or fears that might influence their self-treatment. Finally, they were encouraged to place their reflections into their LSG jar.
The jar serves as a resource for students to revisit during challenging times, offering reminders to be kind to themselves and maintain their wellbeing. This activity was designed to help students practice self-compassion and support their emotional resilience when their natural response is to act like a bully to themselves.
