Principal’s Message

Welcome to Term 2. Thanks to everyone who helped the school run so smoothly in my absence at the end of last term – my Japan visit was great!

CIC Week (Week 3): In Week 3 of Term 2 (12-16 May) Central Studies students will be participating in Curiosity in the Community (CIC) Week. There are no formal lessons for Years 10 & 11 and all students are expected to take part in CIC Week. Year 12s have normal lessons this week. Students will apply their STEM knowledge and skills to address real-world problems and promote positive change. A massive thankyou to everyone who is making this week possible; we have almost 300 students off site at various times throughout the week, from five-day camps to – hour excursions! Please keep checking emails for last minute communications.

Parent Information Session (28 May, 7pm Week 5 Wednesday): The ASMS and Governing Council are very keen to facilitate another information evening for families. This information evening is aimed at all ASMS families who are encouraged to attend, to hear from and to discuss with staff and parents the topic of ‘What does learning really look like?’.

Year 12 Home Study: From the beginning of Term 2, Year 12 students may apply for Home Study during some of their study sessions at the beginnings and ends of their days. Approved home study will mean that students are able to have more flexibility in managing their schoolwork and other commitments and take responsibility for this management.
A Study Session is a session in which a student has no scheduled class. Home study is a privilege and its approval and continuation throughout the year are contingent on students keeping up to date with their subject work and participating in all required school sessions.

To ensure that students are not choosing to come in only for a single brief session, they are also able to choose up to two of the 40-minute Learning Studies sessions to have as Home Study providing that they fit the criteria listed below. Home study may be approved for:

If the Thursday Learning Studies session is missed, students will need to demonstrate a satisfactory plan to engage with the mandatory Child Protection Curriculum delivered at this time. In order to have Home Study privileges approved, students need to complete various administrative tasks which have been emailed to them. Home Study is not approved until this process has occurred and students are expected to be in school during all sessions until this time.

Students on Home Study will need to sign in on their arrival at school, and sign out on leaving the building, as for any other reason. If students are signed into the building during Learning Studies time, they must be in Learning Studies, whether or not it is an approved home study that day. Students are always welcome to be in the school during a nominal home study lesson but will need to sign in for emergency management purposes. When students are signed out for Home Study they are not on site and not under the school’s supervision.

Should you have any questions about Home Study please feel free to ask Learning Studies teachers.

Staffing news:
Richard Greig has let us know that his cancer treatment is progressing well, and he sends his regards to everybody. In his absence Jason Backler has stepped into the Learning Studies Leader role and we welcome Amber Masoulf and Terry McDevitt to the teaching team.

Marcus Roberts is currently away from ASMS unwell. During his absence many people are stepping into the various parts of his role and I’m very thankful to them. We wish Marcus a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on site before the end of term.

Term Two has had a great start with students settling into their learning and embracing the opportunities that being at the ASMS affords them. Please remember to regularly check the Portal to see the range of additional enrichment opportunities students can take part in.

Reminder Careers Expo & Year 12 Formal Night 9 May and Student Free Day 6 June.

Kind regards,

Kylie Eggers
