The Energy Equation

Welcome to The Energy Equation for 2025!

TEE looks at understanding the source, amount and method of energy production and uses along with the motivations, benefits and downsides of its use. This takes the form of exploring energy use in the past for pursuits like sieging a castle with catapults, to more contemporary uses such as Fossil fuel combustion. We then explore the pros and cons of nuclear power, before moving on to more sustainable options for energy generation and storage for the future.

Module 1 –Burn the World takes a look at energy types and transformations using catapults. We mathematically model trajectories to make accurate predictions about the use of our Catapults to siege Dunsinane castle (tying in with the MacBeth unit from Communication Systems). We then move forward into the chemistry and energy production of the combustion of fossil fuels, determining how much energy different types of fuels are capable of producing.

Module 2, Set Fire to the Sky will begin late in Term 1, extending to mid term 2, where we explore the benefits and drawbacks of nuclear power from historical and indigenous perspectives, considering the motivations of the varying parties. Our final module, Fuel the Future brings together these understandings of historical and current use of energy sources, to consider the challenges relating to energy that loom in our future. This module will look at students investigating an issue of complexity facing society to scientifically investigate, or to engineer potential solutions.
