Our ASMS delegates have returned from the Japan Super Science Fair (JSSF) 2024, hosted by Ritsumeikan Junior & Senior High School in Kyoto, Japan.
The ASMS participated along with other schools from Australia, Cambodia, Canada, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, Malaysia, Nepal, The Netherlands, The Philippines, Republic of Korea, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States, and Vietnam.
Here is what our students had to say about their incredible trip to JSSF…
JSSF was a great experience and opportunity to meet lots of wonderful people from around the world. We listened to science talks, presentation, and watched wonderful cultural performances. I learnt about bridge structures in a fun group experiment. There was lots of time to collaborate with people from so many different countries and share our piece of our lives with each other, especially in the culture booth time, where you could walk around and experience a little bit of each country. It truly was a fantastic experience, and I am looking forward to going back sometime in the future. – Sam
JSSF was a great experience I wholeheartedly believe it is something everyone should have the opportunity to explore as an international event. If we weren’t making and playing cards with new friends, we were engrossed in the incredible scientific research and projects presented by our fellow JSSF members. The genuine friendship and open mindedness of the collective JSSF groups were the most refreshing and heart-warming interactions I have had! My favourite event had to be the poster presentation, seeing other people genuinely interested and pursuing an academic focus on their interest instilled a newfound appreciation for the value of academics in my life. I loved Japan so matcha! Sugoii! – Mariam
Going to JSSF at Ritsumeikan was the highlight of my year. My favourite part was learning about new culture and meeting people from all around the world. I learnt about DNA tracking in IPS cells during one of the lectures. I participated in a science discussion where my group won 1st place. Japanese Super Science Fair was a great experience, where I learnt a lot, and I would recommend it to everyone. – Jasmine
Our trip to Japan was an unforgettable experience for me. It gave me the opportunity to make new friends from around the globe, partake in fun science activities and exchange cultural experiences. We began our Japan trip at the Japan Super Science Fair where we participated in icebreaker activities to meet new people. On the second day we watched the school’s science presentations and participated in challenges with students from other schools. The third day was the poster presentations where students from each school would stand by their poster and explain their research to others. Myself and other students from ASMS found India’s project, focused on bioplastics and their use in single-use plastics, fascinating and hope to see more development of it soon. The fourth day was my favourite by far as we went on an excursion to the Fushimi Inari Shrine. Day five was very sad as we had to leave the JSSF. This day I did a science activity where we were supposed to create our own LED creations. My group made a diorama of our night out on day 4. Including LED downlights and a handcrafted torii gate. After that the last cultural performances were held and then the closing ceremony. – Jade
